CONGO

During the recent civil war in Congo, AMURTEL was one of the few NGO's to stay while the bullets and bombs were flying. Didi AnandaBhaktidhara took in over 50 children found abandoned or lost in the city of Brazzaville when their parents fled or were killed. They faced together the struggle for food and existence while the war raged. Afterwards, many of the children's parents were traced and the children were re-united with their families. Now the home is taking care of 35 orphaned children.

There is also a medical clinic serving the remote villages of the Pygmy tribe.

Mombasa: Children's Home

The children's home and school is located in the low income area jsut outside the port city of Mombasa, Kenya. The home has 19 girls. The school serves the local community which is very poor. The school recently expanded to include full primary up to 8 Std. (8th grade). However, water is scarce in the area and the infrastructure is undeveloped.

Nairobi: Schools for the Poor

"Nairobi" is a Masai word meaning "sweet water". Nairobi, Kenya is just on the equator, at the edge of the Rift Valley and not far from snow-covered Mt. Kenya. The weather is one of the best in the world - comfortably cool at nights, warm in the day. From all over Kenya, people have flocked to the capital city to find their fortune and security. Unluckily, though, many find themselves getting by only just above the poverty line. To get a chance for a good future, a good education for the children is necessary. Unfortunately, this is not affordable for many families. AMURTEL runs 6 schools at cheap fees in the poor areas of Nairobi. The schools range from 130 children in 4 rooms to just 30 in a one room school. There is a need to open more schools and to expand or improve the services of those we have.

Njoro (Nakuru): Home for Street Children

At Njoro, Kenya, Ananda Atalanta is a growing community development project. In cooperation with the local Lion's Club (Ladies) 10 girls, street children who would otherwise face a life of destitution and abuse, have started a new life in the Ananda Children's Home. The 5 acres of land at Ananda Atalanta is fertile and ready for farming. Plantations of vegetables and fruits will provide a food source for the home children as well as a steady income for further development.

South Africa

 Rural School in South Africa

In the Zulu rural areas near New Castle, AMURTEL runs 6 schools and kindergartens. AMURTEL provides breakfast at all the schools so that the parents do not have to choose between paying for education or food for their children. This assistance is vital to the families of this undeveloped area.

Running all of these projects throughout Africa are the dedicated sannyasis (nuns) of Ananda Marga. Their bright saffron robes catch the eye as they bring a cheerful and loving touch to the different projects they work in. These women are devoted, hardworking and sincere in their efforts to bring relief to suffering humanity.
